Welcome to Skadar, the fourth largest city in Albania and the cultural capital of the north of the country. Skadar (Albanian: Shkodër or Shkodra) is located on the shores of the famous Skadar Lake, just a few kilometers from the border with Montenegro and in close proximity to the foothills of the Albanian Alps. The city is known not only for its rich history dating back to the times of the Illyrian tribes and the Roman Empire, but also for its diverse cultural life and picturesque center, which invites you to stroll among colorful houses and cafes.

The dominant feature of Skadar is the legendary Rozafa Castle, from whose walls you can see the confluence of three rivers and the city itself. The Marubi National Museum of Photography is also worth a visit, where you can get a glimpse of Albanian history through unique images. In Skadar you will also find the largest Catholic cathedral in the country, St. Stephen's Cathedral.

Whether you are attracted by history, nature, or local gastronomy (don't forget to taste the carp from Lake Skadar!), Shkodra is an ideal starting point for exploring northwestern Albania, including trips to the Albanian Alps, the Buna River Delta, or the shores of the largest lake in the Balkans.

Lake Koman - An artificial reservoir in northern Albania, created in the 1970s by damming the Drin River for the purpose of generating electricity. The lake is approximately 34–35 kilometers long, its maximum depth reaches up to 96 meters and its width ranges from 50 to 400 meters. A cruise on the lake is one of the biggest attractions in Albania, the landscape is reminiscent of the Norwegian fjords.

A ferry ride between the ports of Koman and Fierza takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and is the main connection to the Albanian Alps.

Albanian Alps - A limestone mountain range can be found in northern Albania and partially extends into Montenegro and Kosovo. It is one of the wildest and least affected mountain areas in Europe, often called the Cursed Mountains due to their rugged and difficult to access terrain. In addition to mountains, you can also find deep canyons, clear rivers and waterfalls.

The highest peak, Maja e Jezercës, rises to 2,694 m above sea level.

The area was isolated in the past due to the proximity of the border, which allowed the traditional way of life of the mountain communities to be preserved.

The Albanian Alps are a paradise for hiking - around Theth and Valbona you will find a good network of marked trails, including a famous hiking trail between these two villages.

You can get here by car or minibus. It is better to buy food and equipment in the cities, as shops in the mountain villages are very limited.

Bears, wolves, lynxes, eagles and other rare species live here.

Buna River Delta - The Buna Delta is a significant natural area with wetlands, lagoons and islands, important for biodiversity, especially fish and waterfowl. The entire area belongs to the Buna-Velipoja Protected Landscape Area. The river is used for shipping, although low bridges prevent more traffic.
